Cardiorespiratory Training Methods: Aerobic Cross Training

Posted by energygroup on August 14, 2009

RideAerobic Cross training involves a combination of all aerobic training methods, varying the intensity and modes. The type of training is good for people in the maintenance phase and who would like variety their in their training sessions.  An example of Aerobic Cross training is 20 minutes bike to the pool for a 15 minutes swim, then a 20 minute bike  back to start, then add a 15 minute jog.

Have a great weekend!

Get fit, keep fit and have fun doing it!

Snowshoeing with Natural Trekking

Posted by energygroup on January 16, 2009

Just heading off up the mountain

Ashley, Courtney, Sarah, Kathy & Margot

Our first member appreciation event took place on Wednesday January 14th.  We took a guided snowshoeing tour with Lois from Natural Trekking along Dog Mountain trail on MT. Seymour.  Snowshoeing was new to most of us so it was quite and event trying to figure out how to put the snowshoes on!  Good thing Lois was there to help us!!  Once we got all our gear on we headed up the mountain.

While heading up the trail we had lots of chatting, laughing and falling!  I wonder if it was the snowshoes our the people using the snowshoes that caused us to slide down some of the downhill sections!  I was pleasantly  surprised the trail was not just one big up high and then plateauing at the top, we got quite a workout walking up and down the rolling hills.

Yummy Hot Chocolate

Once we arrived at the top, we had a georgous view of the city lights.  The cloud was low and sparce.

There we had hot chocolate and a cookie that Lois provided for us.  Although we were so warm when we arrive we started with water and then as we started to cool down the hot chocolate was just lovely.

Walking back down the mountain

After our  little break at the top we headed back down the trail.  The way down there was certainly less chatting  – I think we were all tired!

We had an amazing time – Thank you Lois!  I’m looking forward to the next snowshoe tonight! Cheers, Angie

Strength training or resistant training?

Posted by energygroup on October 24, 2008

Good Afternoon!  Looks like the sun is coming out!

Again, today I’m going to write about strength training.  There is so much to talk about I thought I would keep going!  So…

You may have heard people, personal trainers included, mention strength training and resistant training and wondered what’s the difference.  Well there is no difference the terms are used interchangeably.  They both refer to “…exercising with progressively heavier resistance for the purpose of strengthening the musculoskeletal system.”   Whether or not you us a hand weight, barbel or resistant band you’re strengthening your muscles.  ACE Personal Training Manual.

Now that we know there is no difference we need to know why is it important to strengthen your muscles?  4 different components are affected when strengthening your muscles: metabolic, phyical capacity, physical appreace, and injury risk. I already mentioned the metabolic component in a “did you know fit fact” and mentioned 1 fact for physical capacity (the ability for the body to do “work”),so the 2nd fact for physical capacity is…

strength training improves the functionality of the muscle – ie how long you can carry a shopping bag, walk up stairs, play with your kids (ie. swinging them around).  A trained muscle will be able to participate in activities for a longer period of time. Makes sense doesn’t it! So why do so many people forget about strength training and just do cardio work?

Last year a dragon boat team joined us on their off season to see if this type of training would help them increase their strength and after 1 winter training at our Group POWER® class they were able to move faster on the water and felt stronger and more capable.  They moved up in the medal standings!! This is their 2nd season with us and I’m looking forward to see how they do next year!

Feel free to train your muscles with us!

Have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Angie
